Imagine for a moment, that you are a survivor of domestic violence. You have made the difficult decision to leave behind a life of fear, control and abuse, but now you face an entirely new challenge – creating a home for yourself and your children with very limited resources.

This is a reality for so many families who have fled from domestic violence. After leaving domestic violence refuge, they are left with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a desperate need for safety, security, and a place that feels like home. 

That’s where Friends with Dignity comes in.

Our Sanctuary Program is more than just a temporary shelter. We transform houses into homes. We help families rebuild their lives with dignity and hope, providing them with a fresh start, and a real chance to find their feet.

Our program is run by a group of dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to create a welcoming space using items donated by our supporters. These items range from household essentials like bed linens, towels, and crockery, to more personal items like toiletries and gift cards that allow our clients to choose their own clothing and personal care items.

The process of setting up a Sanctuary is not a simple one. Our volunteers start by collecting all of the donated items that are needed to transform an empty shell into a welcoming home. This includes everything from basic kitchen appliances and white goods to comfortable couches and a TV for family entertainment. Our volunteers work tirelessly to arrange the furniture, make the beds, and stock the pantry with essential items.

But it’s not just about the physical space. Our volunteers take care to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the needs and preferences of the family who will be living there. We want our clients to feel not just safe, but also valued, respected and supported in their journey.

The transformation that takes place when we turn an empty house into a warm and welcoming Sanctuary is nothing short of magical. For the families who will be living there, it represents a fresh start, a chance to rebuild their lives with hope and dignity. 

And it’s all made possible by the generosity of our supporters, who donate not just items but also their time and energy to make our Sanctuary Program a success.

We are proud of the work we do and we know that it makes a real difference in the lives of those we support. But we can’t do it alone.
